Why Your Kid Hates Math (Part 1)

Your kid does well enought with every subject in school but math. He or she isn’t a genius, “A” student, or even on the honor roll. Who knows? Maybe he or she is!

And then there’s math.

For as long as you can remember, there’s been nothing but dread associated with your kid and math. Your teenager would rather eat artichokes or spinach. The child you’ve raised would prefer cleaning a toilet or the garage.

Here are five clear reasons why.

  1. Math is an unpleasant subject. If Johnny doesn’t know the subject that well, it shows somewhere.
  2. There are holes in that knowledge. Lisa might know math pretty well, but her issues with conversions may slow her down.
  3. Grades are D’s or worse. It is your job—not the school’s–to keep your child on track. If Morgan struggled to get that D, the fight isn’t over.
  4. One of you thinks that time, the next course, or the right teacher will fix the issue. That new instructor—like the last one—will soon know that your child is
  5. They need a personal touch. If a teacher says your kid has trouble, listen. A professional is taking the time to tell you.

Your kid has a problem that needs to be solved. It will worsen over time. If a right course or teacher was coming along, it would have happened already. Maybe it did if a teacher said your kid needed tutoring and you declined.
